How to get your business on Google Maps

A step-by-step walkthrough of claiming and filling in your free Google listing.

When someone searches for a business like yours, Google shows a map with a few local businesses underneath it. Getting into that group is one of the most valuable things a local business can do, and the starting point is free: a Google Business Profile.

Step 1: Check whether you already have a listing

Search your business name and town on Google. If a box with your business appears on the right (or at the top on a phone), a listing already exists. Google often creates them automatically. Look for a link that says "Own this business?" If you see it, the listing hasn't been claimed.

Step 2: Claim or create your profile

Go to Google Business Profile (business.google.com) and sign in with a Google account. Use one your business controls, not an employee's personal account. Search for your business, then claim it or create a new one.

Step 3: Verify

Google needs to confirm you're the owner. Depending on the business, verification may be done by video, phone, text, email or a postcard mailed to your address. Follow the instructions Google gives you; the options vary from business to business.

Step 4: Fill in everything

  • Business name, exactly as it appears on your sign. Don't add extra keywords.
  • Category. Pick the most specific primary category, like "Auto repair shop" rather than just "Store."
  • Phone number and website.
  • Hours, including holiday hours.
  • Address or service area. Businesses that go to the customer, like contractors, can hide their address and list the towns they serve instead.
  • Services or menu with short descriptions.
  • A business description: who you are, what you do, how long you've been doing it.

Step 5: Add real photos

Add your storefront or vehicles, your team, your work and your interior. Listings with good photos look more trustworthy and get more attention.

Step 6: Ask for reviews

Your profile gives you a short link to request reviews. Share it with happy customers by text or email, or print it on a card. Respond to every review, good or bad, politely and briefly. Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them; that violates Google's rules.

Step 7: Keep it current

Update hours before holidays, add new photos every month or two and post occasional updates. An active listing tells Google, and customers, that you're open for business.
